A Rare c1900 London Made Racquet Press
This is a very rare old piece. It is a three racquet press. It is quite heavy. It is all solid Mahogany, with Brass handle and threaded brass wing nut tightening rods. Inside there are two timber sheets so the press would have accommodated three racquet heads. Tennis using racquets came in during the 16th Century, then in 1875 the official rules of Lawn Tennis were certified for the purpose of holding the first ever Wimbledon tournament in 1877. With lawn tennis, on a dewy morning, or a sprinkling light rain day, the grass would get wet and therefore the racquets got wet. After the game they were placed into these racquet presses so the timber would not warp or twist from the moisture. A Very rare cool old sporting invention. It measures approx 35cm by 37cm
