c1800 Ivory & Amber Chinese Cricket Cage!! - Yes True
This is something i have never seen before. This is a mid Qing Dynasty Cricket Cage. From the Chun Qui period (770-476 B.C.) crickets were kept as symbols of luck and auspicious virtue. Whenever autumn arrives, the ladies of the palace catch crickets and guarded them in small golden cages, which were placed near their pillows so as to hear their songs during the night. This lot is a mobile cricket cage. It is a Gourd that has been hollowed out, then an Elephant Ivory Top Rim is attached, then a Ivory carved lid is made to fit, and the top of the lid is a carved Amber Dome that allows the cricket to breath but keeps him contained. Even the Amber is carved with Bonsai Pines and flowers. This is extremely rare! These were kept in their pockets as they went out in the village. It measures 12cm long, and is in very good condition.
