Hand Painted Scrolls of Kanzan & Jittoku - Bought In 1939 by Sir James in Tokyo
These are stunners. They are a pair of boxed scrolls Sir John Henderson bought in Nikko Japan in 1939. They are hand painted & Signed. They depict Kanzan ( a 7th Century Zen Poet), and Jittoku who was a local kitchen worker at the nearby Guoqing temple at the same time. Their story is that they formed an unlikely friendship and used to head up into the mountains and play out all sorts of Mischievous deeds. Jittoku is the one depicted with the broom at his feet. He used to steal food from the temple to give to Kanzan. Each scroll is in excellent condition and are about 2 metres long each. They come together in the presentation box
