Sterling Silver Oil Lamp - XXIII Sikh Pioneers 1908 - Rare!
This is an exceptional Item. It is a Sterling Silver Candlestick that was converted in the early part of the 20th century into an Oil Lantern. It is well hallmarked with a Sheffield makers mark Walter Latham & Son c1899-1912, (a well renowned Sterling Silver Candlestick Maker.). This piece is in excellent condition and stands 90cm high. It is also inscribed to the front edge "Presented to the officers XXIII Sikh Pioneers by Major H.F.A. Pearson 1908".
The 23rd Sikh Pioneers were stationed at Lahore Cantonment when the First World War began in August 1914. The Regiment received orders to mobilize on 10 October 1914 and its first action of the war was helping to destroy a Turkish fort on the Island of Perim, now in Yemen.
